Public Art

A Song of Freedom

In partnership with the Avondale Community, ArtWorks has created public art works to reflect community traditions, stories and culture, and provide employment opportunities for neighborhood residents. This mural is a tribute to the life and legacy of the late Louise Shropshire, an Avondale resident and activist during the 1960’s Civil Rights Movement. Shropshire was a composer and choir director at New Friendship Baptist Church. Her hymn, ‘If My Jesus Wills’ is credited as inspiring the iconic civil rights anthem, ‘We Shall Overcome’. ArtWorks is honored to partner with the Avondale Community to shine a light on Louise and inspire generations to come. This mural was painted by eight Youth Apprentices including two Avondale residents, led by Lead Teaching Artist Brandon Hawkins, and Teaching Artist Cecilia Padilla.
