ArtWorks is introducing a new public art concept this year called Cincinnati Paints by Numbers! This mural project provides the public an opportunity to purchase a ticket to paint alongside an ArtWorks professional artist and Youth Apprentice team, while gaining a more in-depth understanding of how we transform people and places through investments in creativity.

Our first inaugural theme is Cincinnati’s beloved Fiona and her home, the Cincinnati Zoo!

Phase I: Call for Artistic proposals. Ticket sales open.
Monday, April 9 – Monday, May 7

Phase II: Public voting on the final 5 designs. Time slot selection begins on Friday, May 25.
Friday, May 11 – Monday, May 21

Phase III: Watch the mural unfold! Kick-off will be in mid-July.
Tuesday, July 10 – Wednesday, July 25

Phase I

Call for Artistic Proposals

ArtWorks is seeking mural design concepts for our first ever Cincinnati Paints by Numbers project. Designs should feature or be inspired by our 2018 theme and partner, Fiona and the Cincinnati Zoo.

Artists are invited to submit up to three (3) fully rendered, full color designs for jury and public consideration. Designs must be able to be translated by a public audience (non-professional painters), and successful designs may include flat areas of color or be graphic in nature. Designs should be created with the specific project site and dimensions in mind. All conceptual sketches are to be preliminary and should be able to evolve and transform based on jury input. ArtWorks reserves the right to exclude any submissions from the jury and public review process as deemed necessary.

Cincinnati Paints by Numbers gives the public a chance to paint on the scaffolding with Youth Apprentices and Professional Artists. Experience what it is like to paint one of ArtWorks larger than life murals. Reserve your spot today! Specific date and time slots will be assigned in a first come first serve basis beginning May 25. Sign up for our Cincinnati Paints by Numbers email list to receive up-to-date information regarding ticket sales. Tickets are $250 each. Spaces are limited, reserve your spot today! A portion of proceeds from ticket sales benefits the Cincinnati Zoo.

Public Voting

A Jury comprised of members of the Cincinnati Zoo and ArtWorks Staff will review the design submissions and select five (5) finalists. The public will then have 2 weeks to vote for their favorite Fiona mural. The final design will be announced on Friday, May 25.

Congrats to our WINNER!

We received over 60 submissions for the Cincinnati Paints by Numbers call to artists. A group of judges comprised of the ArtWorks Staff, the Cincinnati Zoo, and the Cincinnati Enquirer narrowed it down to these 5 design concepts. We had over 21,000 votes on Cincinnati.com! Congrats to Lucie Rice on winning the public vote!

Cincinnati Paints by Numbers Comes Alive

The ceremonious first strokes will take place Tuesday, July 10 at the mural location, Rover the Rhine Veterinary Hospital, 910 Race Street. Painting is scheduled for July 10 – July 25 in pre-determined time slots. Tickets are on sale now. Specific dates and time slots will be selected on a first come first serve basis once the final design is announced on May 25. A portion of proceeds from ticket sales benefits the Cincinnati Zoo.
