How do I get a mural in my neighborhood?
You can fill out an application for a mural at any time. Click here for an application.
Applications will be reviewed bi-annually and ArtWorks will contact you about the status of your application. Murals are painted in the Spring, Summer, and Fall.

How do I know when ArtWorks is hiring?
- We can send you e-mails whenever ArtWorks is hiring if you sign up for our e-mail list.
- If you’re interested in Teaching Staff job opportunities for emerging and professional artists and art educators, sign up for the Artist Registry.

When are applications available?
What is the deadline to apply?
- For 2011, the Teaching Staff application deadline is Friday, April 1, 2011.
- Apprentice applicants bring their completed application to one of ArtWorks’ interview dates: Saturday, April 16 or Sunday, April 17. Do NOT mail your application back to ArtWorks.
When are interviews?
- Apprentice applicants have to attend an interview during Apprentice Interview Weekend, two days only! These dates are printed in the Apprentice application and online. For 2011, Apprentice Interview Weekend is Saturday, April 16 or Sunday, April 17, 11 a.m. – 3 p.m. Every Apprentice applicant gets an interview; no appointment necessary.
- Teaching Staff interviews occur during the month of April each year.
When and how do I find out if I’ve been hired?
All applicants are notified of acceptance by mail by the end of May. (No calls, please.)
Where are projects located?
- ArtWorks projects are located in sites throughout the Greater Cincinnati area.
- If hired, directions to your worksite will be provided in your hire packet.
Does ArtWorks provide transportation to work?
- No. Getting to work on time every day is your responsibility. Every attempt is made to keep studios near bus lines.
- You are not able to select the location of your worksite.
- Parking may not be provided at each worksite.
Do you have to live in Cincinnati to work at ArtWorks?
- No, ArtWorks hires artists from the tri-state area.
- All applicants must be committed to working every day at a site in the Greater Cincinnati area.
What is the ArtWorks Summer Program schedule?
- The Summer Program ranges in length from 4 - 9 weeks, from mid-June through the end of August.
- In 2011, projects will occur between June 13 – August 12.
FOR TEENS AND PARENTS
What is an Apprentice Artist?
- Apprentice Artists are aged 14 - 21, hired to work in the ArtWorks Summer or After-School Program
- Apprentices are diverse, hired from the Greater Cincinnati area, on average from 70 different schools and 59 zip codes
- Apprentices work in teams alongside professional artists to create high-quality, public works of art
- Apprentices must be 14 by the first day of the Summer Program (For 2011, this is Monday, June 13)
Is ArtWorks an art camp?
- No. ArtWorks is a job program that provides teen and student artists with professional job-training in the arts. Apprentices work with and learn from local professional artists and art educators
- Because ArtWorks is a job, interested 14 – 21 year-olds must complete and application and one-on-one interview to be considered.
- If hired, Apprentices have specific job responsibilities and tasks to complete each workday.

How many Apprentices do you hire each year?
- The number of available Apprentice positions changes each year based on project needs.
- ArtWorks strives to hire 150 Apprentices annually.
How much do Apprentice Artists earn?
- Apprentice Artists earn minimum wage ($7.40/hour in 2011)
- Apprentices are required to take a half-hour, unpaid lunch break each workday.
What is the ArtWorks Summer Program schedule for Apprentice Artists?
- The ArtWorks Summer Program ranges in length from 4 – 9 weeks, from mid-June through the end of August. (In 2011, projects will occur between June 13 – August 12.)
- The work schedule is Monday - Friday 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
- Apprentices generally work 22.5 hours/week.
- Regular attendance is required! For projects lasting 4-7 weeks, only 3 excused absences are permitted. For projects lasting 8-9 weeks, Apprentices are allowed 4 excused absences. Click here to read more about ArtWorks’ attendance policy.
How do you make hiring decisions?
- ArtWorks strives to build the best team possible for each project. Each team is diverse, with Apprentices ranging in age, skill level and other demographics.
- Applicants are evaluated based on talent/skill level, age, enthusiasm during their interview, if their application is complete and if they are able to commit to working the entire Summer Program.
- ArtWorks is an equal opportunity employer.
Who needs a work permit?
- Any Apprentice Artist who is 14 or 15 during the Summer Program is required by state law to obtain a work permit from their school.
- When ArtWorks sends hire notification letters, work permit forms and complete instructions on how to obtain a work permit will be included for all 14 and 15 year-olds.
- If you are 14 or 15 and do not have a work permit by June 13, 2011, ArtWorks cannot pay you to work.
FOR EMERGING/PROFESSIONAL ARTISTS AND ART EDUCATORS
What positions are available for artists other than Apprenticeships?
- ArtWorks hires emerging/professional artists and art educators 21+ as Teaching Staff for the Summer and After-School Programs.
- Available positions are Project Managers and Teaching Artists.

What are your hiring criteria?
- ArtWorks strives to build the best team possible for each project. This team must have skill sets to meet ArtWorks’ project needs and the needs of the partnering community/organization. ArtWorks considers the following in making its hiring decisions for Teaching Staff:
- Relevant skill level and expertise in the project mediums
- Previous leadership experience (a must for all positions)
- Education (Project Managers: BFA, graduate degree or commensurate experience; Teaching Artists: BFA preferred, graduate work preferred)
- Teaching experience (preferred)
- The ability to work productively in a collaborative, teamwork environment (a must)

How many artists do you hire each year?
- The number of available Teaching Staff positions changes each year based on project needs.
- ArtWorks strives to hire 30 - 40 Teaching Staff annually.
How much do artists earn?
- Artists working on Summer or After-School projects are paid in stipends. Stipends range based on the position they are hired for, their experience and the length of the project. Click here to learn more about job responsibilities and stipends.
What is the ArtWorks Summer Program schedule for Teaching Staff?
- Summer Program schedules vary in length and range from 4 – 9 weeks. (For 2011, projects will occur between June 13 – August 12.)
- Work weeks are Monday – Friday, 8:30 a.m. – 2:30 p.m.
- Work hours average 30 hours/week, including weekly team meetings and adequate time for preparation and clean-up.
- If hired, your particular schedule will be clearly defined in your hire letter and contract.
Are there pre-ArtWorks Program time commitments?
- Yes. Pre-Program time commitments include orientations for all hired staff, at least one teaching team planning meeting, First Aid training and workshops.
- All Pre-Program time commitments will also be defined in your hire letter and contract.
